Mandatory Fees

Tuition

Tuition rates are set and approved by the UMass Board of Trustees.

Tuition credits, formerly known as tuition waivers, are an award that will lessen the amount of your tuition. While you may receive or be eligible for multiple tuition credits from a variety of sources, you will only be able to use one tuition credit per semester.

Activity Fee

The Student Activity Fee supports programs and activities from recognized student organizations that are beneficial to students and enrich current campus student life, including arts, athletics, clubs and recreation and other student-focused programs.

Technology Fee

The Technology Fee supports the technology infrastructure and educational environment necessary to meet the technological demands of the 51视频 community.

Other Fees

The following additional fees are charged depending on the individual status of a student or the courses enrolled in.

College & Department-Specific Fees

Certain colleges and departments charge fees to provide resources for college expenses, which may include supplies and equipment used in introductory and higher-level courses, maintenance and upgrade of laboratories and other college facilities, software licenses and other curriculum-related costs.

The major officially declared on a student's record by the end of the add/drop period will be in effect for the entire semester. Any change of major forms received after the add/drop period will not result in removal of the fee for that semester.

Health Insurance

Massachusetts state law requires that all students be enrolled in a student health insurance program that meets the comparable benefits established by the state of Massachusetts.听

You may waive coverage if you have this coverage under a comparable benefit plan. Once you complete the online waiver process, you can see the charge removed on your听.

How to waive/enroll in 51视频 Health Insurance

  • Health Insurance for International Students
    • 51视频 requires that all International Students be enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan. For more information regarding International Student Health Insurance Requirements or Rules for Maintaining Status, visit the International Student & Scholars office.
    • If you are covered by an embassy-sponsored health insurance plan and provide the Bursar's Office with your financial guarantee prior to the waiver deadline, you will not be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Housing and Food Plan Rates

International Student Fee

International students require special services and assistance with visas and other immigration forms before and after they arrive on campus. This per-semester fee helps defray the cost of the necessary staff, equipment and consultants to coordinate international student services.

Late Fee

A $50 late fee may be assessed to anyone currently enrolled with an outstanding balance and without a legitimate exemption as of the due date on the invoice. Exceptions include participation in the 51视频 monthly payment plan, administered by Flywire, sufficient outstanding financial aid and/or loans or direct billing of an approved third party.

MASSPIRG

The Massachusetts Student Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG) is a statewide, student-directed, student-funded, nonpartisan advocacy organization working on environmental, consumer, higher education, voter registration, and hunger and homelessness issues. MASSPIRG student chapters across the state pool resources through a waivable fee each semester and hire professional staff to work with students on these issues. 51视频 students have voted to fund a MASSPIRG chapter on campus. Therefore, all students are assessed the $11 waivable charge each semester. Volunteer, leadership, and internship opportunities are available for students on campus. For more information visit听. Once you complete the online waiver process, you can see the charge removed on your听.

Returned Check Fee

A $30 returned check fee is assessed to cover the cost of checks returned to the University due to insufficient funds, closed accounts, etc. Notification of returned checks will be sent by the payment vendor. A returned check will result in a financial hold being placed on the student account until such time that the funds have been paid. A student who has issued two or more returned checks within any academic year or three returned checks over the course of his/her academic career will be required to pay any outstanding balances with money order, bank check, or validated credit card. Please note, should a payment be made by either a personal check or an online ACH payment, the payment will be subject to a 10-business day hold before the financial hold can be removed.

Graduating students that have issued one returned check prior to graduation exercises, will be required to pay the outstanding balance in the above noted methods.

Study Abroad Fee

Study abroad is a stepping-stone on the road to your academic and career goals, providing you the knowledge, perspectives and understanding of yourself in relation to the world. Students will have the opportunity to enhance language skills, complete degree requirements, make an impact on a developing community and build your professional network as borders and boundaries dissolve. This fee is charged to students who enroll in either a non-reciprocal exchange or partner-led program.

Tuition Surcharge

The Board of Higher Education mandates a surcharge on Massachusetts state university and college students who take more than a required number of credits to graduate. The charge applies only to in-state and regional program undergraduates who began their studies at 51视频.

This surcharge rate is equivalent to the out-of-state rate, per credit, for each credit in excess of 118 percent of "required credits" for the baccalaureate degree. "Required credits" shall include those for single and double majors, minors and credits required for formal certification or licensing. In addition, credits accumulated in online and professional studies will not be included in the count. Where appropriate, the surcharge will be itemized on the student's invoice.
