How We Envision a Supportive Academic Environment

SOAR: The River Hawk Residential Experience was developed using a Residential Curricular Approach, grounded in best practices for co-curricular student learning in higher education. SOAR stands for support, opportunities, achievement, and readiness - key focal points that guide the experiences we aim to provide for our students. By harnessing the power of intentional co-curricular learning and integrating experiential opportunities, our residential education staff deliver meaningful learning and social experiences through a variety of engagements.

Our Residential Educational Staff

The Associate Director for Academic Initiatives and Partnerships, a full-time member of the residential education team, leads the development of the SOAR residential curriculum and educational plan, which outlines learning goals for the entire academic year. Through thoughtfully designed strategies, the plan delivers these goals using a range of methods, including active programs, informational bulletin boards, engaging newsletters, and more.

Area Coordinators (ACs), our full-time residential education staff, implement the same educational plan and learning goals when designing strategies for their individual residence halls. This ensures that all campus residents engage with the same learning goals at the same time, creating a shared learning experience across the residential community. Each AC tailors their strategies to meet the unique needs of their student population each semester.

Resident Advisors (RAs), our student staff members, focus on the Connections learning goal. They help build community within their residence halls by designing community-building activities, engaging in meaningful conversations known as Hawk Talks, and maintaining a supportive presence for their residents.

Our Four Learning Goals

Connections

  • For Residential Education, connections means forming meaningful relationships that foster a student's sense of inclusion and help build a support system aligned with their personal definition of success. A strong sense of connection significantly impacts a student's motivation, confidence, and overall achievement. Through intentional community-building activities and engagement opportunities, Residential Education plays a vital role in creating inclusive environments where are students feel seen, supported, and connected.

Community Responsibility

  • Community Responsibility as a learning goal encourages students to understand their individual identity in the context of shared spaces and their role within a larger community. This awareness empowers students to reflect on their responsibilities to others and consider how they can meaningfully contribute to both local and global communities, now and in the future.

Skills Quest

  • Residential Education plays a crucial role in students' academic journeys by fostering an environment that connects classroom learning with meaningful out-of-classroom experiences. Through thoughtfully designed co-curricular opportunities, Residential Education staff provide residents with strategies that support personal growth and encourage lifelong learning.

Wellness

  • Residential Education recognizes that when holistic wellness is not integrated into a resident's educational experience, various aspects of their well-being can be impacted, potentially affecting their success as students. That is why we are committed to encouraging residents to explore and prioritize their overall wellness. By fostering an environment where residents can better understand their health and well-being, we aim to empower them to adopt meaningful, intentional strategies that support and sustain all dimensions of their wellness. We also strive to help residents build positive support networks and become familiar with the resources available to guide them on their wellness journey even beyond graduation.
