The Department of Nursing offers the following graduate certificates:

Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Certificate (Post-Master's)

This 18- credit post-Masters certificate in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing provides MS-prepared nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for adults with psychiatric and mental health issues. Those who complete the certificate are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for nurse practitioners and/or clinical nurse specialists in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing.

Applications to this certificate should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office with MS and BS transcripts. A goal statement and 3 recommendations should be submitted to the Director of the MS and Certificate Programs in the Department of Nursing. Licensure to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts and an interview by a nursing faculty member is required.

Evidence from an official graduate transcript that documents successful completion of the following prerequisite graduate courses with a grade of B or better is required:

• Theoretical Foundations of Advanced Practice
• Advanced Health Assessment
• Advanced Pathophysiology
• Research
• Social, Cultural, & Policy Issues in Health Care (or equivalent)
• Advanced Pharmacology

Pre-requisite or co-requisite: 33.602 Clinical Psychopharmacology

Disability Outcomes

In the prevention and management of chronic disability, this certificate is designed to augment the preparation of researchers and/or clinicians with an appreciation of the interactions among personal attributes, clinical disease features, and socioeconomic and working conditions. Students will examine the ‘state of art’ theoretical perspectives in disability outcomes. They will develop advanced knowledge and skills in their chosen areas of expertise, including disability evaluation; design and conduct of epidemiologic studies of disease outcomes and their risk factors; evaluation and control of relevant environmental factors that affect work and health outcomes; and development and analysis of strategies for the improvement of disease outcomes, based on public and private policy alternatives.

This 12 credit certificate is designed for students with a background in engineering, public health, clinical services, community programs or psychology.  Through the program students complete a core of six credits in courses specifically oriented to Disability Outcomes and six additional elective credits (chosen with their advisor) in the participating departments (see below).

Geropsychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

The certificate is for the post-baccalaureate nurse who wants to develop greater knowledge and skills in the assessment and nursing care of older adults who are experiencing common mental health and psychiatric problems of late life. Instruction focuses on pathology, psychopharmacology, and behavioral management strategies in nursing care of older adults. Application of other relevant topical areas will include social, cultural and policy issues in health care, applying theory to practice, evidence-based practice, and pathophysiology. Students who complete the certificate are encouraged to apply for advanced practice role preparation as an Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) through the 51ÊÓÆµ Master's program in Nursing.

Palliative and End-of-Life Nursing Care

Palliative and end-of-life nursing care is evolving in response to individual, professional, and societal needs related to the experience of life-limiting, progressive illness. The certificate is designed for the post-baccalaureate nurse who wants to develop advanced knowledge and skills in the evidence-based assessment and nursing care of individuals and families across the lifespan in need of palliative and end-of-life care. Instruction will focus on assessment and communication at end-of-life, symptom management, pharmacology, pathophysiology, cultural and spiritual sensitivity, principles of hospice and palliative care, and ethical, legal, regulatory and policy issues surrounding care and its reimbursement, all with the goal of enhancing quality of life. Students who complete the certificate are encouraged to apply for advanced practice role preparation as an Adult Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner through the University of Massachusetts Lowell Master's program in Nursing.

Sleep and Sleep Disorders in Health - Online

This 12-credit online certificate program in sleep and chronobiology aims to respond to the NIH call to facilitate learning for health professionals in the areas of clinical and theoretical dimensions of sleep and chronobiology. The courses in the certificate program aim to provide the student with fundamental information in the normative mechanisms of sleep as well as biological and environmental influences in sleep and wakefulness across the lifespan. From this foundation, additional course work focuses on diagnosis and intervention in sleep dysregulation with a particular focus on the formal sleep disorders. State-of-the-science intervention strategies are addressed from both the behavioral and pharmacologic perspectives.

Admission Requirements: Master of Science degree in nursing, social work, psychology or other health-related disciplines.
