Music majors pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree are preparing for a career in music. The Bachelor of Music degree offers four areas of emphasis: performance, music business, sound recording technology, and music studies (for teacher preparation). Programs combining two areas of specialization, e.g., SRT and performance, are also available. A student desiring to pursue such a combined course of study must satisfy the requirements in both areas and should plan to spend one or more semesters in residence beyond the normal eight semesters of full-time study required for the successful completion of a program with a single area of specialization.
Individual and group performances are important aspects of all Bachelor of Music programs; students in the performance specialization, however, are required to demonstrate outstanding ability as performers in order to satisfy admission and retention standards. Students preparing for admission to the music studies specialization are required to select applied music courses (private lessons) each semester for maintaining and developing their music skills, and they are expected to develop minimum standards of performance in piano and in their areas of performance emphasis.
The music studies specialization is subject to the same rules and regulations as those which govern all teacher education programs of the University.
All Bachelor of Music candidates must participate in one two-credit or two one-credit ensembles during each semester of their residence as full-time students, unless otherwise specified.

General Department Requirements
In order to qualify for a baccalaureate degree offered in the Department of Music, undergraduates must comply with the University general education requirements, must conform to the requirements of the Department of Music which govern degrees and major studies for such degrees, and must earn at least a 2.000 average in their major concentrations of specialization by the end of the senior year. Additional requirements are specified for retention in specific degree programs.
Vocal performance majors are required to complete two consecutive semesters of the same foreign language.
Music majors are accepted into their intended majors conditionally. They must officially apply to their program of choice. See specific major for requirements and deadlines.
A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 is required for intercollegiate transfer and for transfer from another institution. Additional requirements for admission to specific majors also apply.
Readmission to the Department of Music
Students who have been dismissed from the Department of Music may apply for readmission after one academic year. At that time a minimum grade point average of 3.0 over two semesters of full-time study at another institution or in another major at 51视频 is required to demonstrate adequate academic skills have been developed. Should the student’s previous performance also contain difficulties in applied performance studies, sufficient musical achievement must also be demonstrated by a reaudition.
Students will only be reconsidered after at least one academic year has passed. Sufficient progress must be clearly evident in the work performed since dismissal in order for readmission to the major to be approved. If the student does not qualify for readmission to the Department of Music at the time of reapplication, future applications will not be considered.
All Bachelor of Music degree students in the music studies program must successfully complete eight semesters of applied music (private lessons) on their principal instrument. The performance specialization requires eight semesters of study and a public senior recital. Music Business students and sound recording technology are required to take six semesters of applied music. An evaluation by a faculty panel is required of all full-time undergraduate music students each semester, with the exception of the first semester of the freshman year. Studio grades are submitted to the faculty panel prior to the evaluation. In computing the final grade, the faculty evaluation panel may raise or lower the studio grade by a maximum of one full letter grade, or the panel may allow the student grade to stand as submitted. Any student who fails to perform for the faculty panel because of an unexcused absence will receive a final semester grade of F.
Any student enrolling for applied music beyond the credits required for his or her respective degree and major must do so through the Continuing Studies and Corporate Education.
With the exception of first semester freshmen, all undergraduate students play a panel evaluation each semester of residency. In the semester that a required recital is performed, the student is exempted from a panel evaluation.
Recital Attendance Requirement
All undergraduate music majors are required to attend ten concerts and/or recitals each semester from among those listed on the Department of Music Performance Calendar. In addition, attendance at scheduled recital hours on Thursdays is required.
Seven satisfactory semesters of recital attendance are required of each undergraduate student with the following exceptions: 1) students who are in residence fewer than seven semesters and transfer students must fulfill the recital attendance requirement for each semester of residence as full-time matriculated degree students; and 2) part-time students have no requirement.
Failure to complete the total recital attendance requirement will result in denial of graduation.
Ensemble Requirements (Auditions)
All music students must audition for ensemble assignment during the first week of the fall semester. Auditions are held during the first week of the spring semester for all new music students, transfers and re-admitted students. Students who do not qualify for a two-credit ensemble are assigned to two one-credit ensembles. Ensemble assignments are usually for the academic year.
Music students who elect to participate in Marching Band or Jazz Rock Big Band must also audition for assignment to an appropriate choral or instrumental ensemble.
Ensemble Requirements (Participation)
All music students are required to be enrolled, as assigned, in two credits of ensemble for each semester in which they are full-time students.
Vocal majors will be assigned to a choral ensemble. Wind, string, brass and percussion majors will be assigned to an instrumental ensemble. Keyboard (piano and organ) and guitar majors will be assigned to an ensemble that emphasizes their major instrument such as guitar, piano or Mixed Chamber Ensemble and possibly to a choral or instrumental ensemble.
Students in the performance major are required to present a senior recital, usually while enrolled in Performance Applied 7. Students may petition the Department Chairperson for permission to present the senior recital one semester early during Performance Applied 6. Students in other specializations may also present public recitals. In all cases, students wishing to present a recital must receive recital permission from the applied music instructor, the appropriate applied music area head and the Chairperson of the Department of Music. A recital permission form may be obtained from the Music office and must be submitted no later than November 15th in the fall semester and March 15th in the spring semester.
Music Theory 1 Proficiency Exam and Related Policies
Students in all sections of Music Theory 1 must successfully complete a written proficiency exam in the fundamentals of music scheduled for the sixth week of the semester. The exam will be given in all sections of Music Theory 1 simultaneously.
Those who do not receive a passing grade for the Proficiency Exam are not permitted to continue in Music Theory 1 or Aural Skills 1, and must re-enroll in Music Theory 1 and Aural Skills 1 the following semester.
Those students who are repeating Music Theory 1 must retake the Music Proficiency Exam as a graded exam for the course, and need to pass the exam to remain enrolled in the course. Students repeating Music Theory 1 (after previously failing the course or who were withdrawn from the course after failing the Proficiency Exam) must receive a passing grade in the course in their second attempt.
Students who fail Music Theory 1 in their second attempt will be dropped from their Music major and dismissed from the Department of Music. Please see below for more detail.
Students who pass Music Theory 1 in their second attempt but fail Aural Skills 1 are required to retake and pass Aural Skills 1 before moving on to Music Theory 2 and Aural Skills 2. Please see below for more detail.
Options for those who do not pass the Proficiency Exam
In the remaining weeks of the semester, students who have not passed the Proficiency Exam should continue working in the fundamentals of music by working with student tutors and using available software in the Music Technology Lab (Durgin 410).
Music Theory and Aural Skills Course Sequencing Requirements
Music Theory 1 is a prerequisite for Music Theory 2, and Aural Skills 1 is a prerequisite for Aural Skills 2. Music Theory 1 must be taken at the same time as Aural Skills 1, and Music Theory 2 must be taken at the same time as Aural Skills 2. All individual levels of Aural Skills and Music Theory are co-requisite and must be taken concurrently. If a student fails to complete a semester of one subject they cannot move on in the other until the course is completed. It is a requirement that students be registered for the same level of Music Theory and Aural Skills unless they are making up an uncompleted course.
Policies on Failing Music Theory 1 and Dismissal from the Department of Music
It is the policy of the Department of Music that students who fail Music Theory 1 twice, or who are withdrawn from Music Theory 1 once and fail Music Theory 1 the second time the course is taken, are dismissed from the Department of Music. Students are removed from their Music major, and changed to an “Undeclared Liberal Arts” major. Students may choose to stay at 51视频 and pursue another major; these students should seek guidance from the Centers for Learning, as they are no longer affiliated with the Department of Music.
