The main purpose of the language programs is to provide students with the ability to function more effectively in the multicultural world we line in. The courses offer students the opportunity to acquire an ability to use second languages and to become aware of the cultures in which they flourish.
Language programs focus on the major intellectual concern of this century, culture and communication. Serving as the paradigmatic model for thinking in the human sciences, language occupies a high rung in the conceptualization of numerous disciplines and sign systems. Language courses offer an understanding of language as a system and a model of communication in its cultural context, in addition to providing skills in a number of languages. The learning of languages facilitates the cultural connection with the various linguistic groups of the region. The specific areas of study include instruction in language, literature, linguistics, civilization and culture.
The course offerings also facilitate students majoring in other fields to develop familiarity of a second language and an awareness of cultural diversity. Many offerings are interdisciplinary and several are given in English. These include an extensive selection of core courses in several distribution areas. The Spanish major provides student with preparation for careers in business and social services, legal and medical professions and the fine arts.

Under the auspices of the Department of Cultural Studies, Languages offers the following programs: a Bachelor in Arts with a Modern Languages (BA) and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in French, Spanish or Italian (BLA). In addition, students may select to minor in French, German, Italian or Spanish or may wish to study Arabic, Cambodia, Chinese, Greek, Japanese or Latin.
MINOR REQUIREMENT IN MODERN LANGUAGES
French
A minor area of study consists of 18-24 credits with at least six credits at the 300 levels. Beginning courses in French at the 100 level may not be credited to the French minor.
German
A minor area of study consists of 18-24 credits with at least six credits at the 300 levels. Beginning courses in German at the 100 level may not be credited to the German minor.
Italian
A minor area of study consists of 18-24 credits with at least six credits at the 300 levels. Beginning courses in Italian at the 100 level may not be credited to the Italian minor.
Spanish
A minor in Spanish consists of 18-24 credits with at least six credits at the 300 or 400 levels. Beginning courses in Spanish at the 100 level may not be credited to the Spanish minor. Students who are interested in the application of Spanish to the health professions should take 54.313 Fieldwork in the Spanish Community
Related Minors
Several interdisciplinary minors related to the, study of language are available, including, Cultural Studies, Italian Studies, Latin American Studies and Film Studies.
