Health Informatics

The management of information in healthcare is growing in importance. Applications include: electronic medical records, physician order entry systems, pharmaceutical systems and financial applications. This Certificate is intended for individuals with a background in health and healthcare who wish to apply current computer technology to the management of healthcare services in clinical, financial and record keeping areas.

Completion of the Certificate will qualify a student to sit for certain parts of the American Health Information Management Association's Certification Credential depending on background and the completion of other courses required by the AHIMA. Nurses can sit for the ANA Nursing Informatics Certification.

Health Management

The certificate is designed to meet the growth in management opportunities arising in the health care industry due to technological development, the increasing percentage of older people in our society, and the demands to provide efficient yet high quality patient care. Employment for trained managers in teaching and community hospitals as well as with other providers such as rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes, and homecare agencies are increasing. Positions are also opening in ambulatory clinics, insurance companies and health maintenance organizations. Each of these organizations provides expanding employment opportunities and career paths for professional growth for clinicians and non-clinicians alike. This certificate program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for careers in healthcare management as well as further pursuit of graduate degrees.

Health Policy

The certificate is designed to prepare students to address the health care policy changes needed to meet public and community health needs, with especial attention to those of low-income and minority populations. Opportunities for trained policy specialists are increasing in public health agencies, non-profit community organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Each provides expanding employment opportunities and career paths for professional growth for clinicians and non-clinicians alike. The program of study for the policy certificate consists of 2 basic courses and any 2 relevant courses from across the campus.

Required Courses:
32-625 Health Policy
32.626 Strategic Leadership and Change

Electives (choose two courses with the approval of the Coordinator):
From the Health Management and Policy electives or from other courses offered across campus concerned with health policy in departments such as; Work Environment, Regional Economic and Social Development, and Community Psychology.

In consultation with the HMP Coordinator the student needs to take two courses from the Health Management and Policy electives or from other courses offered across campus concerned with health policy in departments such as; Work Environment, Regional Economic and Social Development, and Community Psychology.

Courses that can be taken include but are not limited to: Public Health Systems; Comparative Health Systems, Immigrant; Low-Income and Minority Health Issues; Theories of Health Behavior and Change; Research Methods in Economic and Social Development, International Occupational Health & Safety.

Special programs can be designed to meet individual need.
