Citizen participation in the planning, implementation and evaluation of community development activities generates a variety of challenges as well as significant opportunities. Exploring complex issues such as housing, the environment, community safety, and economic development through a participatory lens can lead to more creative and successful planning outcomes. Coupled with a review of relevant planning literature, the activities of this course will allow students to examine the complex dynamics of participatory community-based planning initiatives, while focusing on their individual interest areas, or an identified community need. Case studies are used to help course participants learn about the planning process, including what skills planners may need, where planners can be found, and how to engage the community in planning processes from problem identification to evaluation Students will use the information gathered and peer feedback to develop their own community-based planning process.
