This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of investment finance in the private and public sectors, emphasizing concepts and tools that are useful to practitioners interested in economic development. The differences between the goals of finance and investment in the private and public sectors will be presented along with an overview of financial intermediation. Methods of corporate finance, including markets for debt, equity, options and futures will be introduced. Capital market imperfections that affect the economic development will also be analyzed along with methods of financing public investment and the connections between public and private finance and investment. Cases of local and regional development financial tools such as revolving loan funds, private and public venture capital funds, loan guarantee programs, and the experience of the Community Reinvestment Act will studied. Prerequisite: Foundations of Comparative Regional Development
