Poll: Democratic Challenger Mamdani Leads in New York City Mayoral Race

51ÊÓÆµâ€™s Center for Public Opinion through YouGov surveyed 800 New York City likely voters from Tuesday, Aug. 19 to Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025 about preferences between New York City mayoral candidatesÌýDemocrat Zohran Mamdani his closest challenger, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, Republican Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.

Key Findings:

  • If the Nov. 4 election were held today, 44% of likely voters in New York City would cast their ballots for Zohran Mamdani.
  • An overwhelming majority of respondents, 73%, strongly or somewhat disapprove of how incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is handling his job, while 27% strongly or somewhat approve.
  • Other results show dissatisfaction among voters, with 75% indicating the country is on the wrong track compared to 25% who think the nation is headed in the right direction.
  • Although displeased with President Trump, respondents also appear lukewarm about the Democratic Party’s leadership.
