Since graduating from 51Ƶ with an English degree in 2013, Ryan MacInnis’ career has taken him to Meta, Twitter, LinkedIn and the U.S. Department of State.
As a product marketing manager, MacInnis navigates some of the most complex issues in global technology — questions about privacy, safety and trust that shape how billions of people interact online.
“It’s fascinating, important work,” says MacInnis, who is currently a senior product marketing manager at Meta-owned WhatsApp in New York City. He focuses on the messaging app’s consumer payment strategy in markets such as India and Brazil, helping to ensure that digital transactions are secure and seamless.
“That’s a consistent throughline in my career — privacy and security while also making sure you’re building trust with the people that use the tech,” the Lowell native says.
By joining the Manning School of Business Professional Leaders Council, MacInnis has found a way to put his experience to work at his alma mater. The alumni group helps prepare students for the realities of the modern workplace through mentorship, networking and guidance on emerging business trends.
“51Ƶ has made a tremendous impact on my life and my career,” MacInnis says. “I wanted a way to give back to the school, to help students have an edge and to share what I’ve learned in my career.”
As an English major, MacInnis spent mornings in class and afternoons covering high school sports as a co-op at The Boston Globe. That experience, he says, honed writing and communication skills that would become the foundation of a career bridging media, business and technology.
After graduating, he joined Acquia, a Boston software company, as a product marketing manager, then moved to Twitter (now X), where he helped launch developer tools. He went on to lead marketing at the legal technology startup Notarize, developing partnerships that enabled more than $1 billion in real estate transactions through online notarization. At LinkedIn, he helped launch and grow an interactive advertising format and product pages for businesses.
Along the way, he pursued graduate degrees — a Master of Business Administration from New York University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania — studying responsible automation, ethical technology and the intersection of business and human rights.
Those interests led him to Meta, where he has worked on responsible artificial intelligence and age-appropriate ad policies, as well as a brief turn in public service as a technology policy advisor at the U.S. Department of State.
MacInnis is determined to help 51Ƶ students prepare for what’s ahead in a rapidly changing world.
“I'm constantly thinking about helping the next generation of students, the next generation of professionals, understand the challenges that we're facing every day in our fields as marketers, as people who are trying to solve really important business problems,” he says. “There are things that the school may not be thinking about yet, so it’s important to help weave that into the curriculum to help students understand.”
