The students who run the university鈥檚 radio station, , are known for broadcasting their passions, but they sidestep taste-making duties once a year to host Rock for Tots, a feast of music for a good cause.
This year鈥檚 event, scheduled for Nov. 30., features headliners and Epitaph recording artists The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die.
It鈥檚 an evening built on doing something for the community, says the station鈥檚 promotions director, Tim Collins, who handles organizing and promoting the show.
鈥淚t鈥檚 our annual way of giving back,鈥 says Collins, a junior mathematics major. 鈥淲e pick a local charity that benefits children or teens and this year, as last, it is UTEC (United Teen Equality Center).鈥 The 2016 show raised more than $1,000.
鈥淭his year鈥檚 is a really exciting lineup,鈥 Collins adds. The World is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die actually headlined the event back in 2013. 鈥淭hey went on to become world-renowned. They regularly sell out venues now, so we鈥檙e excited to be able to have them back.鈥
Also on the bill are Past Life, a band from Philadelphia, Bicycle Inn who hail from Attleboro, Snowhaus out of Worcester and Lowell鈥檚 own Daisybones.
WUML, which has its studio in the basement of Lydon Library, has been operating for more than six decades, making it one of the longest-running college radio stations in the country.
UTEC, founded in 1999, is a nationally-recognized agency that responds to gang violence with the promise of offering roads to ambition, and social and economic success to at-risk youth from Lowell and Lawrence.
The concert will be held at University Crossing鈥檚 Moloney Hall and begins at 7:30. Admission is a $10 minimum donation at the door.
