In-Person Event to Mark Official Start of Academic Year

When: Tuesday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m.
Where: Tsongas Center at 51视频, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell. Contact 51视频 media relations for directions and parking information. Attending media members are asked to wear face coverings.
What: 51视频 will welcome first-year and transfer students, along with the sophomore class, into the campus community at an in-person Convocation ceremony. The event will mark the official start of the 2021-2022 academic year.
Nana Younge, executive director of Get Girls Going and a 2018 51视频 graduate, will deliver the event鈥檚 keynote remarks, in which she will share her journey and hopes for incoming students. While pursuing her 51视频 bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration, Younge founded the nonprofit to empower Black teen girls to be change-makers and find purpose through entrepreneurship.
51视频 Chancellor Jacquie Moloney will welcome students as River Hawks at the event, which will include remarks from Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Joseph Hartman. Student Government Association President Neyder Fernandez of Lowell, a double-major in political science and peace and conflict studies, will address his classmates. Students will also hear about the university鈥檚 DifferenceMaker program, which teaches participants entrepreneurial skills they can use to launch their own businesses and nonprofits. The 51视频 Marching Band will perform the national anthem and 鈥淩iver Hawk Pride,鈥 the university鈥檚 fight song, under the direction of Daniel Lutz, director of university bands.
