Students Pitch Ideas for Banking and Finance Innovations

When and where: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 6 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell. Note: This event was rescheduled from Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019.

What: 51视频 students developing products, services and technologies for the banking and finance industries will pitch their concepts to a panel of expert judges as they vie for seed money to advance their ideas at the DCU/Manning School of Business Innovation Contest. The free event for the campus and community is part of 51视频鈥檚 DifferenceMaker Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills and helps students launch business and nonprofit ventures. Since the program began in 2012, participants have founded 33 companies, raised more than $2.5 million to support their startups and have filed or received eight patents.

Green Community Partnership Hosts Grant Proposal Open House

When and where: Wednesday, Feb. 12, 6 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell

What: Launched by 51视频 in partnership with the City of Lowell, the new Green Community Partnership provides leadership, resources and expertise for sustainability initiatives. As part of the collaboration, a new grant program has been established to fund university-community projects that align with the sustainability goals in 51视频鈥檚 2020 Strategic Plan and the City of Lowell鈥檚 Sustainable Lowell 2025 Master Plan. Individuals and groups from the campus and community interested in applying for a grant and learning about the program are invited to attend this open house. Future of Energy Storage Explored at Experts鈥� Forum

When and where: Thursday, Feb. 13, 7 p.m. 51视频 Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: Findings from 51视频 researchers on the role of energy storage in a carbon-free future will be shared at the forum 鈥淲hat鈥檚 the Story on Storage,鈥� presented by the Northeast Energy and Commerce Association. 51视频鈥檚 Christopher Niezrecki 鈥� chairman of WindSTAR, a cooperative research center dedicated to the advancement of wind energy and professor of mechanical engineering 鈥� will be among the event鈥檚 featured speakers.

University Orchestra Serenades Public at Free Concert

When and where: Friday, Feb. 14, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell

What: The University Orchestra 鈥� comprised of musicians who are 51视频 students, faculty and members of the community 鈥� will present a free Valentine鈥檚 Day concert for the public. Selections to be performed include George Gershwin鈥檚 鈥淎n American in Paris,鈥� Georges Bizet鈥檚 鈥淐armen鈥� and Pyotr Tchaikovsky鈥檚 鈥淩omeo and Juliet.鈥� The ensemble performs compositions of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as challenging, diverse contemporary works, all under the direction of 51视频 Music Department faculty member Mark Latham. Tickets are not required for admission and free parking is available in the Wilder Lot nearby the venue. Members of the public who would like more information should email music_dept@uml.edu.

Photo Exhibit Focuses in on the Azores

When and where: Artists鈥� reception, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. University Crossing second floor, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell

What: The exhibit 鈥淪eeing the Archipelago鈥� will feature photographs taken by 51视频 students who traveled to the Azores as part of a class on documentary imaging that also taught them about the history of immigrants who came from the islands to Lowell. The students 鈥� who hail from communities including Boston, Methuen, Lawrence, Tyngsborough and Wakefield, along with Afton, Va. 鈥� will also share what they learned through the study abroad experience at an artists鈥� reception. Paulo Teves, the Azores鈥� regional director for communities, is expected to offer remarks at the event. Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the campus and community. Economist Examines Housing Market Forecast at Free Event

When and where: Thursday, Feb. 20, 11:45 a.m., 51视频 Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Homebuilders, will address the latest economic and housing forecast and offer his opinion about the potential for a recession at 鈥淭he Housing Affordability Crisis.鈥� The free program is the latest in 51视频鈥檚 Lunchtime Lecture series, which engages the campus and public in educational and cultural topics of interest. The event is presented in partnership with the Moses Greeley Parker Lectures. Members of the public who would like to attend should email community@uml.edu by Friday, Feb. 14 to register.
