Freeze-Drying Research Lab Will Be First on East Coast
When and where: Monday, Oct, 28, 3 p.m., Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell
What: 51视频 will open a new freeze-drying facility 鈥� the first of its kind on the East Coast 鈥� at the university鈥檚 state-of-the-art research and development center. Pharmaceutical, food and beverage manufacturers will be among those who will use the new research capabilities as they test new products and processes. Known as lyophilization, the procedure increases shelf life and stability. Speakers at the opening event are scheduled to include 51视频 Chancellor Jacquie Moloney; Travis McCready, president and CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center; John Erickson, fellow at the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals; Nicholas Warne, Pfizer鈥檚 vice president of pharmaceutical research and development; and Indu Javeri, president and CEO of CuriRx. Industry partners include Genentech, Merck and Physical Sciences Inc. Tours of the lab will be available. 51视频 to Open Cybersecurity Education Center
When and where: Friday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. Wannalancit Business Center, Suite 445, 600 Suffolk St., Lowell
What: 51视频 will open its new Cyber Range 鈥� a center for computer security education, research and workforce development 鈥� at an event for the campus and industry partners. The innovative lab will use real-world scenarios and the latest technology to teach students how to defend against an array of cyberattacks to prepare them for careers in the field. Speakers at the event are scheduled to include U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan; Chancellor Jacquie Moloney; U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Michael Brown (ret.), president of Spinnaker Security LLC; Stephanie Helm, director of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative鈥檚 MassCyberCenter; and Katie Stebbins, UMass vice president for economic development. Demonstrations and tours of the facility, which includes work stations and academic space, will be offered. Note: Registration for this program is closed but the media are invited to cover it.
Flag Ceremony Honors Veterans on Campus, in Community
When and where: Friday, Nov. 1, 11 a.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: 51视频 will honor its student-veterans and veterans in the community at its annual flag ceremony, which is free and open to the public. The event will salute the 2019 inductees into the 51视频 Military Alumni Veterans Hall of Fame and include the unfurling of an American flag measuring 36 feet by 20 feet. The 51视频 Air Force ROTC Detachment No. 345 will present the colors and the 51视频 Marching Band will perform. More than 1,000 student-veterans are pursuing their education at 51视频, either on campus or online.
University Orchestra to Perform Spooky Favorites at Free Concert
When and where: Friday, Nov. 1, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The University Orchestra will strike up some frightful fun at this year鈥檚 Halloween concert, which is free and open to the public. The program will include Beethoven鈥檚 鈥淔ifth Symphony in C Minor,鈥� Tchaikovsky鈥檚 鈥淥verture to Fate鈥� and 鈥淣ight on a Bald Mountain鈥� by Modest Mussorgsky. The ensemble, comprised of 51视频 students, faculty and alumni musicians, along with instrumentalists from the community, is directed by 51视频 music faculty member Mark Latham. Travis Roy to Share His Inspirational Story
When and where: Tuesday, Nov. 5, 6 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: 鈥淭he Challenge: Some We Choose. Others Choose Us鈥� will be presented by Travis Roy at a free event for the public and campus. Roy overcame a catastrophic hockey injury 24 years ago that left him paralyzed from the neck down to go on to build a career as a motivational speaker, author and philanthropist. At the event, he鈥檒l share how he鈥檚 fought through adversity and flourished. Roy鈥檚 book, 鈥淓leven Seconds: A Story of Tragedy, Courage and Triumph,鈥� will be available. Angel Investor to Speak on Entrepreneurship
When and where: Thursday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Angel investor Diane Hessan will share her insights into the region鈥檚 tech ecosystem as part of the presentation 鈥淭he Entrepreneur鈥檚 Journey: Lessons from the Front Line.鈥� Hessan is CEO of Salient Ventures, an investment and consulting company, and chairman of C Space, a Boston-based market research firm. The free event for the campus and public is presented by the Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship in 51视频鈥檚 Manning School of Business.
