Convocation Welcomes Students New to 51视频
When and where: Tuesday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m. Tsongas Center at 51视频, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: Emmy Award-winning producer and director Pierce Freelon 鈥 an entrepreneur, jazz musician and former mayoral candidate of Durham, N.C. 鈥 will address more than 3,000 new first-year students and transfers at Convocation, which officially opens 51视频鈥檚 academic year. Incoming students joining the River Hawk family will be welcomed by Chancellor Jacquie Moloney and other representatives of the university, along with student leaders from Boxford and Lexington, Mass., and Cumberland, R.I. The event will include a performance by 鈥淣ew Hampshire Idol鈥 winner and 51视频 graduate Nicole Hayek of Salem, N.H., and a pitch contest featuring students in the university鈥檚 DifferenceMaker entrepreneurship program, which has led to the launch of several ventures and new patents.
College of Education Students to Receive Free Laptops
When and where: Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, Sept. 5, noon. O鈥橪eary Library Learning Commons, Room 528, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Chromebook laptops will be presented to first-year 51视频 students who plan to become teachers. Through the pilot program, the laptops will provide students an important tool in completing all of their coursework, as well as exclusive access to a range of Google Education tools used by teachers, while also reducing their college costs. Faculty researchers in the College of Education will study whether providing free laptops 鈥 a practice common in K-12 education, but less so among colleges and universities 鈥 promotes academic success for the participating students.
Exhibit Explores Portuguese Influence Around the World
When and where: Opening reception, Tuesday, Sept.17, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Saturday, Sept. 28. O鈥橪eary Library Learning Commons, Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: 鈥淧ortuguese Heritage Around the World: Architecture and Urbanism,鈥 a free exhibit open to the campus community and public, will explore the influence of the Portuguese people on other cultures, particularly from the 15th to 17th centuries. Portuguese music expert Rui Vieira Nery will discuss the influence fado and other musical genres at the exhibit鈥檚 opening reception, which is also free and open to all. The exhibit is presented by 51视频鈥檚 Saab Center for Portuguese Studies and the 51视频 Libraries. The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12:30 to 5 p.m. Members of the public who would like more information should email Natalia_Melo@uml.edu.
Startup Showcase Highlights New Products
When and where: Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6 p.m. 51视频 Innovation Hub Haverhill, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill
What: The 51视频 Innovation Hub Haverhill kicks off its monthly Entrepreneurship Development Series with Mass Innovation Nights, a new product showcase highlighting early-stage companies. Four Haverhill-based startups will be featured: Microshare and IT Squared, both of which are based at the iHub business incubator, and Goodie Krunch and Spirit Box. Open House Welcomes Prospective Graduate Students
When and where: Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Members of the public interested in pursuing a graduate degree at 51视频 will discover the quality, flexibility and convenience of the university鈥檚 on-campus and online offerings at an open house. The event will highlight 51视频鈥檚 more than 75 options for graduate degrees and more than 70 certificate programs. 51视频 will waive the application fee for individuals interested in enrolling who participate in a session on financial aid during the event. A professional photographer will be available to take free headshots of attendees for their LinkedIn profile or other use. 51视频鈥檚 master鈥檚 and doctoral programs are nationally accredited and ranked for quality and return on investment.
