Exhibit Explores Portuguese Influence Around the World

When and where: Opening reception, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Saturday, Sept. 28. O鈥橪eary Library Learning Commons, Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: 鈥淧ortuguese Heritage Around the World: Architecture and Urbanism,鈥 a free exhibit open to the campus and public, will explore the influence of the Portuguese people on other cultures, particularly from the 15th to 17th centuries. Portuguese music expert Rui Vieira Nery will discuss the influence fado and other musical genres at the exhibit鈥檚 opening reception, which is also free and open to all. The exhibit is presented by 51视频鈥檚 Saab Center for Portuguese Studies and the 51视频 Libraries. The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12:30 to 5 p.m. Members of the public who would like more information should email Natalia_Melo@uml.edu.

Startup Showcase Highlights New Products

When and where: Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6 p.m. 51视频 Innovation Hub Haverhill, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill

What: The 51视频 Innovation Hub Haverhill kicks off its monthly Entrepreneurship Development Series with Mass Innovation Nights, a new product showcase highlighting early-stage companies. Four Haverhill-based startups will be featured: Microshare and IT Squared, both of which are based at the iHub business incubator, and Goodie Krunch and Spirit Box. Prospective River Hawks Invited to Open Houses

What: Individuals interested in pursuing a 51视频 bachelor鈥檚 or master鈥檚 degree are invited to open houses where they will learn about the university鈥檚 academic programs, which are nationally accredited and ranked for quality, return on investment and more. Events are:

  • Undergraduate open houses 鈥 Exhibits, presentations, a resource fair and campus tours will be offered. New programs include degrees in music composition for new media and nutrition with a concentration in dietetics. Graduates earn some of the highest starting and mid-career salaries in the nation.   • Graduate open house 鈥 Participants will discover 51视频鈥檚 more than 75 options for graduate degrees and more than 70 certificate programs. 51视频 will waive the application fee for individuals interested in enrolling who participate in a session on financial aid during the event. Free Event Celebrates Cambodian Culture, Experience

When and where: Monday, Sept. 23, 5 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell

What: 鈥淩ekindling the Light of Khmer Arts,鈥 a free event for the university community and public, will celebrate Cambodian culture with a reading from acclaimed author Alan Lightman 鈥 whose Harpswell Foundation works to empower the next generation of women in Southeast Asia 鈥 and a preview of a documentary about Cambodian dance by 51视频 student Chummeng Soun, an art and design major from Lowell. The Angkor Dance Troupe of Lowell will perform and copies of Lightman鈥檚 latest book, 鈥淭hree Flames,鈥 will be available. The event is presented by 51视频, Middlesex Community College and the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell.
